ICT Classroom furniture with Teacherwall.
Newick Primary in Sussex posed a very unusual challenge for Fusion Classroom Design when designing a new ICT classroom with teacherwall. A wedge-shaped classroom was to be used as a dedicated ICT Classroom. The design and layout features perimeter benching and a centre island. One end has a teachers desk and a teacherwall with whiteboard doors. The ICT benching is laid to radiate outwards.
The teacherwall furniture makes use of a coloured laminate on the carcassing that matches one of the schools’ logo colours. The configuration of the teacherwall is large whiteboard doors, with tray storage beneath. Unusually the classroom doesn’t have a flat screen for teaching.
Planning the layout in a classroom that narrows considerably was the first hurdle to overcome. The teachers desk is positioned at the pinch-point, so that children aren’t sitting at the narrowest point. The teachers desk is situated at the head of the central island. This island has a power pole bringing cables down from the ceiling, into the cable management sections set within the island desk. These have removable cable access covers and the sockets were hard-wired inside. Perimeter benches make use of dado trunking for power and data connections.
Space Planning The ICT Classroom
The space plan layout drawing shown here illustrates the wedge shape of the classroom. Fitting in a full class of 30 with good viewing angles to the teaching point was the number 1 objective. Fusion also incorporated ergonomic evaluation to determine the best height for the ICT furniture. With an age range of 6-11 using the classroom there isn’t one perfect desk height. Instead it was decided to go with 700mm for the desk surface to floor dimension, ideal for the older KS2 children.
Set within an unusual classroom this ICT furniture design makes the best of the space, in a bright and practical style. Viewing angles for both children and the teacher are maximised. Circulation space is acceptable even at the pinch-point, and the provision of power and data is neatly incorporated into the central island.
