School desk chairs should follow basic guidelines for the appropriate ergonomic setup.
- Seat Height should be set so that your upper legs are parallel with the floor.
- Arm height should allow elbows and forearms to be level with the keys on a keyboard (or as flat as possible).
- Seat depth should allow 2-3 inches to the back of the knee/calf.
- Arms should allow a User to be close to the desk.
Desk chairs are available for hard or soft floors…regular castors for carpet, soft-tyred castors for hard floors, with the option of braked castors if chairs move too easily.
The finish of a
desk chair plays an important role in the comfort and performance of a chair. Fabric upholstery offers the most sit comfort particularly with high wool content materials. Fabrics using a high proportion of synthetic fibre will perform well in terms of wear and stain resistance, but mostly offer a much lower performance for breathability and greater heat retention. Low cost chairs using polyester fabrics will usually have the poorest heat dissipation making the chair feel less comfortable over an extended seated period.
Mesh has become a popular chair cover, balancing durability with heat dissipation. Overall mesh is still less comfortable than good quality wool fabrics but in general are a good compromise for
desk chairs. The current trend is for chair backs in mesh and seats in fabric. Low cost mesh covers are associated with increased wear and tear on clothes.
